Whether it is nobler in the mind to leave well alone!
Now I love the look of a rerooted Sasha or Gregor along with most others BUT personally I believe that a Sasha etc should only be rerooted if they have bad hair, ie falling, badly cut etc.
I also believe that if it's a boy it should be rerooted as one. I have just seen for sale a very nicely reroot Sasha , well he is a Sasha now! He/she has the most beautiful original hand painted eyes!
Not being a Sasha expert I could not tell you the year but I would think it's an early one and now this Gregor is lost!
It is a shame that there are people who may not realise the Sasha/ Gregor they are 'improving' is in fact worth more ( maybe not finiancially) in his originial glory than the extra pounds they may get for their sex change reroot.
I am sure there will be many amongst you who will not agree with me , however having seen the beautiful eye's on this ' girl ' I just had to say my piece!
I am now getting off my soap box until next time : )
I'm not sure just what I really think here so if it's OK with you I'll pass on this one until I can give it some more thought, but will be interested to read what other's think.
ReplyDeleteI am all in favour of re-rooting/wigging when the original hair is beyond repair to give the doll a new lease of life.
Sasha love from Kendal....who doesn't usually sit on the fence!
Basically the only difference in the Gregor/Sasha dolls was the fact that the boys had their eye lashes painted out with a band of paint, rather like an eye-liner, towards the end and then re-rooted with shorter hair which was finally styled in a boy's short, back and sides.
ReplyDeleteI think that one of the factors of re-rooting Gregors and keeping them as boys in the past has been how to get and keep their shorter hair lying flat without the length weight to pull it down and secondly to cut the feathered, shorter styling that is needed though this is now gradually being sorted and fast overcome.
My 1970 Dark Denim Gregor, Ross, was one of the very first boy re-roots to be done due to his very badly falling/rapidly shedding hair. His wider face also caused a bit of a problem in that it added some extra hair which had to be thinned down in the final styling.
Another factor is that over the years the Sashas have always been much more popular and in greater demand than the Gregors (plus the latter have always been priced much more cheaply on the second hand market.)
Prettily painted eyes will automatically be associated with a girl rather than a boy and personally I'd prefer to have an attractive boy doll rather than a pretty one plus we occasionally hear people say of a doll 'He looks like a boy!'
Reading the above it seems that there are several 'for and against' here.... so guessing that I'm no further forward in my view.
I have not problem with a Sasha/Gregor/baby waif being saved by having a reroot and their eyes repainted if there is a problem but I wish people who keep the boy's as boy's!
DeleteWell , this is a tough one. I personally wouldn't want to own a 'transgender' doll as I like my girls to be girls and my boys to be boys, but looking at some of Sarah's (VS) re roots who were once boys I think they look good, well, beautiful actually. I think it it how well the re design of a Sasha is executed and Sasha M herself was always experimenting with different styles, so if she was here herself I don't think she'd mind :)
ReplyDeleteGood topic though Dee!
I agree that some doll's which have been changed to look lovely and it can be hard to tell what they started as but I am beginning to get worried about the amount that are being changed ! Although Why I should worry as maybe my boy's will become so rare they'll be worth a fortune!!!!
DeleteJust sit back and have a WALNUT WHIP!!!!! :)
DeleteI cannot because they are stuck some where out in the SNOW!!!!
DeleteWhere is international rescue when you need them..!
Thunderbird one are GO!! da dada dada da
One of the thing's that drew me to these doll's when I saw them in the early 80's was they had little boy's dressed as little boy's!
ReplyDeleteI haven't really thought about this, being quite new to Sasha, but on the subject of rerooting, I think I would do it (or have it done) if the hair were very thin. I'm actually thinking of rerooting some extra hair into the slightly thin fringe of my lovely redhead girl...her hair had already been cut into a bob so I don't feel I'm harming her in any way. I just think it would look nice to have a thicker fringe.
ReplyDeleteAs for boys to girls or vice versa, I recently received a girl BJD in a trade, who's face sculpt had originated as a boy....I knew immediately that (s)he wasn't for me and sold the head....sometimes it's just hard to get past it in your head. But I have to say that in the BJD world, there are sooo many supposedly boy sculpts that look just like girls to me, so it's sort of something I've got used to that way around.
Big hugs Sharon xx
I might be being daft here but if you’ve got a Gregor with long hair so now a girl, why can’t you just chug his hair short and restyle back to a boy?
ReplyDeleteI didn't have one but what I'm getting at is the boys are cheaper than the girls , so if a boys rerooted as a girl, they will charge girl prices plus rerooted prices.
DeleteIf a boy doesn't need rerooting.... is it only being done to profit?
and at some stage there could be no boys....
*cut, not chug!
