MORE OF THE SCW

Brenda Walton from the Trendon Factory was down to give a talk but unfortunately could not make the weekend. so the display was designed this year to focus on the Sasha dolls EYES.

So People have been given a list and asked to bring in any dolls that they had that could be used in the display to show off the differing eye styles.

Starting with the developmental eyed girl  and working all the way through both Frido Trendon and Gotz dolls.

At the end here was a Sasha  Village gathering! With Ashley and  Wren at the back, Raven in the pink and Lucas and Adam at the end.

Yes Lucas! did he behave.... mm not too sure there were tales of noises and shouts coming from the room late into the night but when the door was unlocked everyone seemed to be in place.. apart from Lucas who was usually found further down the line being restrained , it appeared by another doll !

Jocelyn was asked to give a talk about the Frido/ Trendon eyes , which took place on the Friday evening after dinner. There was a lovely big screen and close up images of the dolls faces and Jocelyn told us all about their eye styles.

On Saturday evening after dinner it was my turn... yes . me... Now not being a tech person I did not even think about laptops and projecting onto screens... didn't even cross my mind!
So the diners were treated to photocopied photo's of a selection of the different eye styles with me holding aloft larger images, while giving my talk and passing them around the tables.

Here is my talk , in case you'd like to see what I said..

FOR THE LOVE OF GOTZ.............EYES....

I RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM OUR HOSTESS THE LOVELY JANET ASKING IF I COULD GIVE A TALK ON THE EYES FROM THE GOTZ FACTORY PRODUCTION.

OBVIOUSLY SHE’D SENT IT TO THE WRONG EMAIL ADDRESS, THIS I COULD TELL BY THE WAY IT STARTED DEAREST BRIGITTE ....

I HAVE TO SAY I WAS SURPISED TO BE ASKED BECAUSE I AM IN NO WAY AN EXPERT BUT I AM A LOVER OF THE GOTZ DOLLS. NOT EVERYONE FALLS FOR THEIR CHARMS AND THIS CAN IN PART BE TO DO WITH THE EYES. DUE TO THE LACK OF ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND THE MASS PRODUCTION AT THE FACTORY SOME OF THE GOTZ DOLLS THAT APPEAR FOR SALE CAN HAVE EYES THAT HAVE ARGUED AND ONE’S DECIDED TO LEAVE BY MOVING DOWN TOWARDS THE CHEEK!

NOT EVERYONE WANTS A DOLL WHO CAN ONLY APPEAR LEVEL EYED IF THEY STAND FOREVER WITH THEIR HEAD TILTED TO ONE SIDE!

SO LETS SEE IF I CAN BRING YOU OVER TO THE DARKSIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN...

IN 1964 GOTZ WERE GIVEN THE LICENSE TO PRODUCE SASHA DOLLS.
THE FIRST PRODUCTION CONSISTED OF DOLLS WITH BLUE OR YELLOW EYES. SIX SLIGHTLY DIFFERING STYLES WERE USED AT THIS TIME.

FIRST UP WE HAVE BLUE OR YELLOW/ORANGE IRIS WITH GREY OR LIGHT BROWN SHADING IN THE LOWER HALF, SMALL BRUSHED PUPIL, LIGHT BLUE OR WHITE EYE SHADOW WITH LASHES.

THESE RARELY COME UP FOR SALE ALTHOUGH THERE ARE A FEW IN SASHA COLLECTORS HANDS.

ANOTHER STYLE WAS OCHRE IRIS WITH DARKER BRUSHED SHADING IN LOWER HALF ND A DARK OUTLINE AT BOTTOM. SMALL BRUSHED PUPIL AND WHITE EYE SHADOW WITH EYELASHES.

A THIRD EARLY STYLE WAS DAKER BRUSHED SHADING IN LOWER HALF OF EYE , AGAIN THE SMALL PUPIL, LIGHT BLUE OR WHITE EYESHADOW WITH EYELASHES. THIS WAS ONCE OF THE EARLIEST SO IS MOST COMMONLY FOUND.

THE LAST OF THE VERY EARLY STYLES INVOLVED A MUCH LIGHTER OCHRE COLOUR WITH A SPLASH OF ORANGE, DARKER SHADING IN THE LOWER PART OF THE EYE AND AGAIN THE SMALL PUPIL WITH TURQUIOSE OR PALE BLUE EYE SHADOW AND  AGAIN WITH LASHES.

THE FIFTH IS MUCH MORE IN THE STYLE OF WHAT WAS TO BECOME MORE COMMON IN LATER DOLLS. AGAIN STILL THE OCHRE IRIS BUT THIS TIME WITH A THICKER SHADING AT THE LOWER EDGE AND THIS TIME A LARGER PUPIL WITH NO EYESHADOW OR LASHES. A GLOSSIER PAINT WAS USED AND THIS CAN RESULT IN THE UPPER EYE LIDS ALMOST BLENDING INTO THE DOLLS SKIN COLOUR.

IN THE LAST OF THESE STYLES THE IRIS MOVES AWAY FROM THE OCHRE TOWARDS A NICE BROWN AGAIN A LARGE PUPIL AND JUST A TOUCH OF GOLDEN YELLOW TO WARM THE EYE, PALE OR NO EYE SHADOW AND NO EYE LASHES.

THESE STYLES ARE THE 64 TO 66 PRODUCTION EYES DURING 1966 GOTZ MOVED AWAY FROM THE YELLOW EYES AND INTO THE DARKER EYE STYLES.

FIRST WE HAVE THE MOST COMMONLY FOUND, THAT OF THE GREY OR SLATE EYED SASHAS. SOME OF THE GREYS ARE ALMOST BLACK THEY ARE SO DARK ALSO A DARK OR MEDIUM BROWN WAS USED. THESE EYES ARE RINGED WITH A DARK GREY HEAVY OUTLINE, THEY CAN ALSO HAVE A LIGHTER GREY SHADING IN THE LOWER HALF OF THE EYE. LARGE BLACK PUPILS AND WHITE EYE SHADOW, NO EYELASHES. THESE CAN VARIE DEPENDING ON WHO WAS PAINTING THEM

THESE ARE MAINLY FROM 66 TO 68 .

AT THIS TIME DOLLS WERE ALSO PAINTED IN WHAT IS CALLED CRUDE OR ROUGH STYLE. I HAVE TO SAY THAT THESE EYES DO LIVE UP TO THE NAME. DARK BROWN WITH NO WORRIES ABOUT BEING PERFECTLY ROUND AND UNIFORM MUCH MORE FREE HANDED, AN IRREGULAR OUTLINE AROUND THE IRIS LIGHT BROWN IN LOWER EYE , LARGE ROUND PUPILS, DARK EYELID LINES.  THESE WERE PRODUCED IN LATE 68 TO EARLY 69.

THEN WE COME TO THE SAUCER EYED DOLLS, PRODUCED AROUND 1969 TO 70, THESE EYES HAVE AIRBRUSHED IRIS’ES WHICH ARE EITHER ROUND OR OVAL SLIGHTLY LIGHTER DETAIL SHADING IN THE LOWER HALF AGAIN A LARGE ROUND PUPIL, FLATTENED EYELID LINES AND PALE EYE SHADOW.

PERSONALLY I ALWAYS FOUND THESE DOLLS SPOOKY LOOKING BUT THERE ARE  A FEW THAT I HAVE FOUND TO BE QUITE NICE BUT I WOULD’T WANT TO FIND ONE STARING AT ME ACROSS A DARKENED ROOM!

NOW WE COME TO THE PIXIE / ELF OF THE SASHA WORLD, THE NO NAVEL DOLLS. MADE ONLY BETWEEN 69 AND 70 THESE GEMS COME WITH TWO EYE STYLES. THESE DOLLS , IF YOU’VE NOT ALREADY GATHERED ARE MY FAVOURITE OF THE GOTZ , CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY THE BUTTON NOSED KIDS.

SO THE NO NAVEL’S, THE EARLIER ONES HAVE LIGHT OR MEDIUM BLUE OR BROWN AIR BRUSHED IRISES, AIRBRUSHED WHITE AND AIRBRUSHED WHITE EYE SHADOW, NO IRIS SHADING AND THE PUPIL IS SMALL AND HAND BRUSHED. THE EYELID LINE IS HAND PAINTED, ARCHED AND BLACK, THE WHITES AND EYEBROWS ARE USUALLY OVER PAINTED BY HAND MAKING THEM THICK AND HEAVY LOOKING.

THE LATER NO NAVELS HAVE LIGHT OR MEDIUM BLUE OR BROWN AIR BRUSHED IRISES, AIR BRUSHED WHITES AND AIR BRUSHED WHITE EYE SHADOW. THE TOP OF THE IRIS IS HAND PAINTED WITH A SINGLE ARCHED LINE AND THE PUPIL IS A TINY SMALL BRUSHED DOT. THE EYE LINE IS AGAIN A FLATTENED LINE ABOVE THE IRIS, THE WHITES ARE SOMETIMES OVER PAINTED BY HAND BUT NOT THE EYEBROWS MAKING THEM SLIMMER THAN THE FIRST STYLE.

THERE WERE A COUPLE OF EXPERIMENTAL GOTZ EYE STYLE DOLLS FROM THE 69/70 PERIOD. THE NO NAVEL DOLL WAS DESIGNED TO COMPETE WITH THE ENGLISH SASHAS IT IS BELIEVED.

WHICH IS WHY THE EYES ARE A NEW STYLE TO BEFORE, SO THERE ARE A FEW DOLLS OUT THERE THAT HAVE RARE EYE STYLES FROM WHEN THE NO NAVELS AND THEIR EYE STYLES WERE BEING DESIGNED.

IN THE SECOND GERMAN PRODUCTION OF GOTZ DOLLS THE EYES WERE TAMPA PRINTED THEN WITH PAIN BRUSHES THE DETAILS WERE PAINTED ON.

THERE ARE A VARITY OF FINISHES TO THESE EYES ON THE DOLLS PRODUCED BETWEEN 1995 TO THE PRODUCTION END IN 2001.

I WILL NOT LIST THEM BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO DROWN IN THEIR SOUP WHEN BORED TO DEATH LISTENING TO SPEAKERS RATTLING ON ABOUT THE TINIEST DETAIL LATE IN THE EVENING WHEN A GLASS OR SIX HAVE BEEN CONSUMED.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION ON THESE NO NAVELS .. SORRY I MEAN GOTZ DOLLS AND ALSO THOSE BY THE FRIDO TRENDON PRODUCTION, I WOULD RECOMMEND THE BOOK BY THE THREE ANNS, SASHA DOLLS SERIE IDENTIFICATION.

HERE YOU WILL FIND EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO IDENTIFY THAT DOLL YOU’VE SEEN, PURCHASED OR COVETED.

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING AND I HOPE THAT I MAY HAVE ENCOURAGED ONE OR TWO OF YOU TO LOOK AT THE GOTZ DOLLS IN A NEW LIGHT.

I WILL BE SIGNING MY BOOK ....WHAT A LOAD OF OLD GOTZ WALLOP.... IN THE LOBBY AT 20 PAST TWELVE AND NO I CANNOT GIVE CHANGE OF A PENNY.

It seemed to go down well and I got the laughs where I wanted them to be and no one threw anything so it must have been okay!

So Tomorrow the crafts and sales tables and Tuesday my purchases and raffle wins. !

  1. I watched your presentation on FB and loved it. I'm not at all a technical person either. The good part is that photocopies are 100% reliable, whereas PowerPoint presentations inevitably go wonky. I would have loved to see that assemblage of kids.

    1. Thank you , glad you enjoyed it. I should have had someone hold the photo's up for me but the rest went fairly well I thought and everyone laughed where I wanted them to! :)
The display of all the different dolls was wonderful, so nice to see almost all the ones out there.

    1. Thank You Ginger. I could have been a little better organised but you live and learn as they say but I thought it went fairly well.
There are so many beautiful dolls out there from both the uk and Germany and it was lovely to see most of them in the display :) xxx

  5. I'm sure that you made some so called 'non-Gotz Sasha' lovers take a good second look at the German Gotz dolls, that you and I SO admire, on account of their wonderfully individual facial expressions.

I would have loved to have given such a talk on these fantastic doll's eye paintings but doubt if I could have raised such delightful laughs at the various points as you did. So well done you.

PS.Many thanks for personally sending/emailing me a copy of your talk so that I could hear and enjoy it with being deaf.
